Heat Pump Rebates in BC: What Victoria Homeowners Should Know

Rebates are the part of a heating upgrade that homeowners most often get wrong, not because the programs are bad, but because the rules and amounts change frequently and the paperwork has to be done in the right order. Here is the picture for Greater Victoria homeowners.

The Two Main Programs

CleanBC Home Energy Retrofit

The provincial CleanBC program offers rebates for switching to high-efficiency systems, with the largest amounts going to homes moving off fossil fuel heating onto an electric heat pump. Equipment must meet efficiency requirements, and installation generally must be done by a registered contractor.

BC Hydro

BC Hydro has offered rebates for customers switching from oil, propane, or natural gas heating to an electric heat pump. These can often be combined with CleanBC amounts, which is where the numbers start to get meaningful.

The Rules That Catch People

  • Order matters. Some rebates require pre-registration or an application before installation begins. Applying after the fact can mean losing the entire amount.
  • Equipment lists are specific. Rebate programs publish eligible equipment by model. A near-identical unit that is not on the list gets nothing.
  • Contractor registration matters. Many programs require the installer to be registered with the program network for the rebate to be paid.
  • Amounts and deadlines change. Programs are reviewed and adjusted regularly. What your neighbour received last year may not be what is offered today.

How We Handle It

When we quote a heat pump project, we tell you exactly which rebates your home and equipment qualify for at that moment, and we handle the paperwork in the correct order. You see the net cost before you commit, not an optimistic estimate.

Current program details are on our rebates page, and the fastest way to get a real number for your home is to request a quote.

Every home is different. Treat this as a starting point, and ask us what makes sense for yours before you decide.
