7 Reasons Your Gas Fireplace Will Not Turn On
Every fall we get a wave of calls that start the same way: “the fireplace worked fine in the spring, and now nothing.” Before you book a service visit, run through this list. A good share of these calls end up being something you can fix in two minutes.
1. Remote or Thermostat Batteries
The single most common culprit. Replace the batteries in the remote and, if your unit has one, in the receiver box behind the lower louvre. Batteries that sat all summer are prime suspects.
2. The Wall Switch
Many gas fireplaces have an ordinary-looking wall switch that people flip off in spring and forget. Check every switch near the fireplace.
3. The Pilot Light
If your unit has a standing pilot, it may have been shut off for the summer or blown out. The lighting procedure is on a plate near the gas valve, usually behind the bottom panel. Follow it exactly, and if the pilot will not stay lit, stop there: that usually points to a thermocouple or thermopile issue, which is a service item.
4. The Gas Supply
Confirm the shutoff valve near the fireplace is open (handle in line with the pipe) and, if you have other gas appliances, check whether they are working. If nothing in the house has gas, contact FortisBC.
5. Tripped Breaker or GFCI
Fireplaces with fans or electronic ignition need power. Check the breaker panel and any nearby outlets with reset buttons.
6. A Blocked Vent
Look outside at the vent termination. Leaves, nests, and even snow can trigger safety switches that shut the unit down. Do not run the fireplace until the vent is clear.
7. It Simply Needs a Service
Dust on the pilot assembly, weak thermopiles, and dirty burners all accumulate quietly. If the checks above do not bring it back, it is time for a proper cleaning and inspection. Annual servicing prevents most of these no-heat surprises, and it is the best thing you can do for the lifespan of the unit.
A safety note: if you ever smell gas, do not troubleshoot. Leave the house and call FortisBC’s emergency line, then call a licensed technician.
